What to Do When You Have a Scratchy Thorat

A scratchy irritated throat is a common symptom of many illnesses. In most cases, it’s nothing to worry about. The condition can be caused by a cold or flu, vocal strain and allergies.

Antibiotics will be of no use when this condition is caused by viral infections and eventually it will go away on its own, usually in about three days. With a viral infection you may also have a low-grade fever, a runny nose and cough. However, there are some cases in which a scratchy throat indicates a more serious problem.

Strep bacteria are a common cause of this condition, especially in children. If the infection spreads and reaches the blood stream it can damage the brain, kidneys and other vital organs. Strep throat is accompanied by a fever, a white or yellow coating on the tonsils and possibly swollen glands on the anterior neck. A doctor can diagnose strep by taking a culture. Antibiotics may be prescribed to treat the infection.

Mononucleosis also can cause these symptoms. It’s passed via saliva exchange, also known as the ‘kissing disease’. It causes a severe pain, weakness, swollen lymph nodes and an enlarged spleen. Only a blood test can diagnose mononucleosis and it’s a virus, so it is not treated with antibiotics.

As stated earlier, a scratchy throat will usually go away on its own. Consult your physician if you have a fever over 101 degrees, the back of your mouth is bright red or coated in a yellow or white substance, or if you have difficulty swallowing. All could be indicative of something more serious; thus it’s advisable to see a doctor.

Since you can never be certain what is causing the condition, it is always a good idea to make a note of when the symptoms begin and monitor the progression. Also, keep track of any home remedies or over-the-counter products you use. This may be helpful information if the ailment persists and a doctor’s visit is required.
